Attorney Richard Serpe & Hampton Roads Realtors discuss Chinese drywall disclosure June 19, 2009

Realtors in Hampton Roads  attended an HRRA Town Hall Meeting to discuss what they are supposed to do if there is Chinese drywall in homes that they are trying to sell. 

The meeting was led by Toxic Tort Attorney Richard Serpe who has teamed up with a consortium of lawyers across the country in an effort to help suffering homeowners deal with health problems, noxious odors and the corrosion of exposed metals throughout their homes.

Realtors and sellers are now faced with a dilemma when selling homes:  If a seller does not tell the realtor that their home contains defective drywall, the realtor will have no knowledge of the contamination.  However, if a seller does tell their realtor, they are obligated to release this information. 

The question is, why aren’t builders required to disclose this information?  Hampton Roads homeowner, Kathy Leach, says that it’s “decieving,” one for the medical reasons, and also because now it will be even harder to sell their home.
