Chinese Drywall Bills Voted Down February 12, 2010
On Thursday, a House Committee voted down two bills based around insurance coverage for homeowners living with Chinese drywall.
The two bills include:
1. Give homeowners the ability to file claims with their insurance company for damage caused by tainted Chinese drywall.
2. Prevent insurance companies from canceling coverage or increasing premiums on homes that were built with Chinese drywall.
Both of these bills were sponsored by Delegate Glenn Oder, Newport News.
Lawmakers across the country, not just Virginia, agree that homeowners deserve to receive some sort of help/relief. That being said, the majority of them feel that involving insurance companies is a bad idea.
It will be interesting to see if any similar Chinese drywall bills are proposed in the near future. While there is still hope for variations of the two bills detailed above, for now, they are dead in the water.
