Fed Money for Chinese Drywall November 20, 2009

SunSentinel.com has been following the Chinese drywall saga closely. Their more recent article is: Federal money for drywall repairs slow in coming. The title pretty much says it all. The federal government is not being as quick as they could in providing financial help to those who have been greatly affected by tainted Chinese drywall.

Recently, the state of Louisiana passed a law that would allow them to use roughly $5 million in federal grants to repair homes with Chinese drywall. This has led to Florida Senator Bill Nelson asking, “If Louisiana can do it, why can’t we?”

Last month, Nelson attempted to get in touch with the Florida Legislature about the possibility of using disaster block grant money to help these residents. Guess what? He is still waiting to hear back from them.

It is a shame, but federal money has been slow in coming. And in some states, it has yet to come at all. At this time, it is believed that more than 36,000 homes in Florida were built with defective Chinese drywall. Doesn’t the government owe something to these homeowners? Hopefully things will begin to speed up in the near future!
